Asafa Powell to face Gatlin & Gay at Prefontaine Classic

Former world record holder Asafa Powell is among four former winners who will face-off against four relative newcomers in the men’s 100m at the 42nd Prefontaine Classic later this month in Eugene, Oregon. The four previous Prefontaine Classic champions collectively have won five of the six IAAF Diamond League titles and 17 individual major medals, including seven gold medals, while the newcomers have but one medal, a bronze, and just one previous appearance at the event. All but one has run sub-10 and the field includes the two fastest of the early season. Powell the king of sub-10 times, with 100 so, far is looking for his first of 2016 after an impressive 10.04 season-opener. He will face 34 year old Justin Gatlin who had his fastest season ever in 2015, to earn the no. 1 world ranking by Track & Field News for the second straight year as well as the American record holder Tyson Gay who won the Diamond League trophy in 2011. The field also includes Mike Rodgers who is the only American to run sub-10 in each year since 2009, 21 year old Canadian Andre Degrasse, Bingtian Su of China, the fastest man in the world so far this year Femi Ogunode of Qatar and Doha Diamond League 100m winner Ameer Webb. The Prefontaine Classic is set for May 27 and 28 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
